SAN DIEGO, CALIF.–The first day at the SDSU Fall Invitational is in the books with Katie Wookey and Alyssa Caffey winning their matches in singles, and the duo of Nikolina Grbac and Kristin Eggleston defeating their opponent in doubles.

In singles, Alyssa Caffey defeated Eastern Washington University’s Nefeli Diamanti with a close score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. She will play Denver University’s Steffi Rath tomorrow.  

Laura Richardson faced off against USAFA’s Hannah Dake falling with a score of 6-1, 6-3. She will face Eastern Washington University’s Rocio Norena.  

Kristin Eggleston was beaten by Denver University’s Emma Isberg also with a score of 6-1, 6-3. She will go up against University of California-Irvine’s Anna Tatsuno.  

Maria Sablina fell to University of California-Irvine’s Ali Facey with a score of 6-2, 6-0. She will play Eastern Washington University’s Chrissy Uriarte.

Katie Wookey won her match against USAFA’s Tasha Hueffner with a score of 7-6, 7-5. She will go up against SDSU’s Roxanne Ellison.

Nikolina Grbac was defeated by Denver University’s Madeleine Bystrom with a score of 6-2, 6-0. She will face off against University of California-Irvine’s Franziska Goettsching.

Michaela Bezdickova fell to University of California-Irvine’s Marivick Mamiit with a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles, the duo of Nikolina Grbac and Kristin Eggleston defeated Loyola Marymount’s Pironkova/Finnell with a score of 8-1. They will go up against USAFA’s Tran/Molina tomorrow.

Laura Richardson with partner Katie Wookey fell to SDSU’s Buth/Somoracz with a score of 8-3. They will play Eastern Washington University’s Warner/Norena.

Maria Sablina and fellow Lobo Susanna Kuuttila lost to University of California-Irvine’s Facey/Tatsuno also with a score of 8-3. The pair will face off against Eastern Washington University’s Patton/ Diamanti.

The team of Michaela Bezdickova and Alyssa Caffey were defeated in a close match against USAFA’s Cecil/Smoke with a score of 8-6. The duo will compete against Denver University’s Bystrom/Schnell tomorrow.

“We are facing some pretty solid competition in our last fall tournament. Today, we had some mixed results and faced an injury that took Anna out of singles,” Head Coach Roy Canada said.

“The first day at sea level proved to be a big adjustment for us. Katie and Alyssa came through to the semifinals of their respective flights with a couple of hard fought gritty wins. Weather permitting, we are looking forward to another solid day of competition tomorrow.”

Play will continue tomorrow morning at the Aztec Tennis Center.
