LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico softball team beat New Mexico State, 3-2, Monday in the Rio Grande Rivalry. UNM snapped a four-game losing streak against the Aggies and earned its first victory over NMSU since 2008. The Lobos belted a pair of homers at the NMSU Softball Complex and improved to 14-15 overall.

UNM hit a pair of solo home runs in the top of the second inning and never game up the lead. Sophomore Stefanie Carramusa smashed her fifth homer of the year, while junior Shenise Cox hit her first.

NMSU (27-11) cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning. The Aggies rattled off three hits and plated a run.

The Lobos added its final run in the top of the third inning. Junior Kaity Ingram doubled with one out and eventually came around to score. Junior Jessica Garcia had a run-scoring single in the inning that plated Ingram. UNM led 3-1 after the top of the third.

The Aggies responded with a solo home run of their own in the bottom of the third inning. Tiare Jennings hit the long ball for NMSU and pulled the Aggies within 3-2.

New Mexico pitching held strong to finish the game and clinch the victory. Sophomore Kari Gutierrez started and pitched the first three innings. Sophomore Kaela DeBroeck got the win and improved to 7-9 overall. DeBroeck pitched the final four innings allowing no runs and one hit.

The Lobos open conference action this weekend at Lobo Field. UNM faces San Diego State Friday at 6 p.m., before hosting UNLV Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. The games will be available via gametracker on GoLobos.com.
