TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team entered the final day of competition at the Arizona Intercollegiate believing it would move up the leaderboard by day’s end.

Once Tuesday’s action was complete, the Lobos had done just that.

New Mexico finished the frigid, windswept tournament having carded a 27-over-par 294-288-297=879, strong enough to move from eighth place at day’s end Monday to into a tie for fifth with UNLV and host Arizona.

San Diego State claimed the team title with a 7-over 859, while Pepperdine’s Andrew Putnam won individual medalist honors, finishing with a 7-under 65-71-70=206.

The Lobos’ Tom Carlson continued the same steady play he’s been displaying since the beginning of the fall season, closing with a 1-over 71-69-74-214 to claim fifth place outright. It marks the fourth time in his last six events that the Sioux Falls, S.D., native finished in the top 10 and his fifth career top-10 finish.

“Tom had a great tournament,” coach Glen Millican said. “Finishing fifth in this field is awesome and a great way for him to start the spring season.”

New Mexico saw strong performances from the rest of its varsity squad, too. Travis Ross also closed well, moving up eight spots in the final round to finish tied for 23rd. Ross carded an 8-over 73-74-74=221. John Catlin tied for 38th with a 12-over 74-73-78=225, while Sam Chavez tied for 43rd, rebounding from an opening-round 80 to by closing the next two rounds at 73-74 to finish with a 13-over 226.

Playing as individuals, Ryan Gay shot a 19-over 76-82-74=232 to finish tied for 58th, while Alex Estrada tied for 66th with a 20-over 79-78-76=233. Sam Saunders shot a 24-over 76-86-75=237 to finish tied for 79th and Shane McDonald closed tied for 82nd with a 26-over 77-77-85=239.

Millican was pleased with his team’s overall performance on Tuesday.

“Weather was tough again today – very windy and cold,” he said. “The guys handled the conditions great. We were able to finish in a good spot.”

The Lobos are almost certainly going to meet warmer weather conditions the next time they take the course. New Mexico is next in action at the John H. Burns Intercollegiate, Feb. 16-18 at the Leilehua Golf Course in Hawaii.
