ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team began their season early today against Mountain West Conference foe Utah in a relay meet held at the West Mesa Aquatics Center. The diving team held its portion of the meet at Seidler Natatorium on the UNM Campus.
Junior Aubrey Bush and freshman Melissa Bollig took first for the Lobos in the 3-meter and 1-meter dives with scores of 288.68 and 260.40, respectively. The swim team collected two second-place finishes in the 300 breaststroke relay with a time of 3:24.35 and in the 800 freestyle relay with a final of 8:03.00.
Head coach Tracy Ljone was satisfied with the team’s overall performance to start the 2010-11 season. “This meet was a month earlier than we are used to, so I was very happy with how we looked having such a small time frame to train in. Our divers were fantastic today, and it was an overall good meet with Utah.”
Freshmen swimmers Stelicia Flores, Gorgi Hobson and Hayley Martin had standout performances this afternoon with Martin posting competitive MWC times.
Ljone looks for the team to only get better as they continue to have more practice time under their belts and is looking forward to her distance swimmers improving on their times as the season progresses.
The Lobos will host an Alumni Meet on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Seidler Natatorium. UNM will return to intercollegiate action on Oct. 14 when they host the Rebels of UNLV at 5 p.m., also at Seidler Natatorium.
