The UNM Men’s Golf team finished its first day of competition at the Arizona Intercollegiate tournament tied for 13th place with fellow Mountain West Conference member Brigham Young at +20.

Tournament officials suspended play at sundown with the Lobos with between 12-15 holes into the second and final round of the day. UNM will resume second-round play Tuesday Morning at 8:00 a.m. MST.

Lobos Steve Saunders and Tom Carlson both shot +5 for the day and are tied for 37th place. Teammates Nick Geyer and James Erkenbeck are only one shot behind at +6, while Jon Sauer rounds out the five-member team having shot +9 thus far. Parker Pemberton (+9) and James Gehrke (+16) are playing as individuals and round out UNM’s participants.

Pepperdine currently sits atop the team leaderboard at -4, with last year’s champion, Tennessee, in second place at even par. Tulsa and San Diego State are tied for third place at +4.

Coastal Carolina’s Zack Byrd holds the individual lead at -8, followed by the University of Tennessee’s Chris Paisley (-6), Pepperdine’s Andrew Putnam (-5), Tennessee’s Darren Renwick (-4) and SDSU’s Matt Hoffenberg (-3).

The 54-hole Arizona Intercollegiate concludes tomorrow at Arizona National GolfClub, a par 71, 6,793-yard layout.
