TEMPE, Ariz. — New Mexico women’s golfer Britney Choy is tied for fourth after the opening round of the PING/Arizona State Invitational held at the par 72, 6,230 yard Karsten Golf Course. Choy shot a 2-under par 70 Friday and enters the second round only two shots behind the leader. New Mexico carded a 14-over par 302 in the first round and is currently in 12th place.

Choy had three birdies during the round and remains in the hunt for the individual title. Sophomore Jodi Ewart and junior Morgan Grantham both shot 5-over par 77 and are tied for 51st. Senior Alexandra Phelps fired a 78 in the opening round and is tied for 61st. Junior Mikaela Backstedt carded an 8-over par 80 and is tied for 74th. Junior Py Bengtsson is playing individually and shot a 17-over par.

Southern California leads the event after shooting a 7-over par 281. Arizona State is second while Georgia is third. Dewi Claire Schreefel has the individual lead after shooting a 4-under par 68.
