New Mexico Head Coach Rocky Long
“I thought our quarterback played much better, obviously. I thought our team felt more comfortable in our scheme and executed better.”
“That’s what rivalry games are supposed to be about. This was the first time since my first year here that we have walked through the tailgate lot before the game and the crowd was there early and the atmosphere around the stadium was big time college football. That’s a tribute I think to our program and to New Mexico State’s program getting better too. It was a rivalry game and the crowd was a big time college football crowd, and that’s a good sign for both teams.”
“I thought the offenses were playing full speed and the defenses were playing half speed. You can attribute that to scout team looks in practice. Defenses get such terrible scout team looks in practice, that they’re not ready for the speed of the game, especially as fast as it was tonight.”
New Mexico State Head Coach Hal Mumme
“I got out coached in the fourth quarter. Jeremiah Williams ran the ball well when he was in there, Chase Holbrook had over 400 yards passing, Chris Williams had 114 yards running. They’re great players. I’m sorry I didn’t coach better for them. We’ll play better next week.”
“You got to give them credit. Last week they had opening game jitters. They went down to UTEP so we knew they would be a better team and it showed.”
New Mexico Senior DE Michael Tuohy
“We always seem to play harder against New Mexico State, because of the hatred we have for them we always seem to play harder against them.”
New Mexico Senior WR Marcus Smith
“We knew they were going to come out and try and play man-to-man, but we knew we were a lot more physical than them. They were smaller than us and we just exposed it as the game went on.”
(On what the UNM offense learned about itself tonight):
“First of all that we can move the ball, and secondly that we can do it against any coverage a team throws at us. We know we can do it as a team and an offense, and we proved a little bit of that tonight.”
New Mexico Senior DE Tyler Donaldson
“We played good as a whole unit. We started getting pressure, starting with Stephen Hutchinson’s sack and that got us all going.”
New Mexico Sophomore QB Donavan Porterie
(On the victory):
“It felt really good, we stayed focused all week no matter how many distractions there were, and made the game about us and only us.”
