COLLEGE STATION, Texas – New Mexico held a 2-1 lead heading into the ninth but surrendered the game-tying run after two outs, sending the game into extra innings. In the 11th, Saint Louis scored three runs on three hits, solidifying its first win of the season, 5-2 and giving the Lobo baseball team (6-9) its third straight loss.
Sophomore designated hitter Dane Hamilton led off the second with a home run to right field, giving the Lobos a 1-0 lead. New Mexico held the lead through the first four innings as junior Bobby LaFromboise extended his scoreless innings streak to 20 straight.
LaFromboise’s streak came to an end in the fifth, giving up back-to-back singles for an unearned run and evening the score at 1-1.
Freshman Adam Courcha singled to center, leading off the eighth and took second on an error. He moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman pinch hitter Bret Fanning and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by junior Drew McDonald for a 2-1 lead.
With two outs in the ninth, Saint Louis’s Gilbert Marlow drew a full-count walk and scored after singles from Ziggy Moore and Tom Pinnell. In the 11th, Marlow was hit by a pitch with one out and scored the go-ahead run on a Pinnell single. Two hits later, the Billikens plated two more runs for a comfy three-run lead.
Saint Louis outhit New Mexico 12-6 and took full advantage of four UNM errors, scoring two unearned runs. Six different Lobos recorded hits. Senior Daniel Stovall and junior Jordan Pacheco each drew four walks. Pinnell and Moore led the Billikens, going 3-for-4.
Sophomore Brandon Hewett suffered the loss, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) in 2.0 innings. B.J. Rodrigue earned the win, throwing 2.0 hitless, scoreless innings.
The Lobos continue action at the Domino’s Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT/11:30 a.m. MT against ninth-ranked Oregon State.
