PALO ALTO, Calif. – The No. 15 ranked New Mexico women’s golf team shot 15-over par in the finals to finish tied for eighth at the Stanford Intercollegiate held at the par 71, 5,985-yard Stanford Golf Course. The Lobos complete their third tournament of the fall and finished 32-over par for the event.
UNM freshman Jodi Ewart (69-70-77=216) tied 13th individually after shooting 6-over par in the finals. Ewart finished the tournament with rounds of 2-under, 1-under and 6-over for a total of 3-over 216. In the finals, Ewart had one birdie but couldn’t overcome four bogies and one double bogey.
Sophomore Alexandra Phelps (72-73-72=217) finished the tournament 4-over par after carding a 1-over par 72 in the finals. Phelps tied for 18th and had one of the best tournaments of her career. In the tournament, Phelps had nine birdies with four coming in the final round.
Sophomores Py Bengtsson, Mikaela Backstedt and Morgan Grantham competed in the event. Bengtsson (77-75-75=227) shot a 4-over par 75 on the final day and placed 47th. Backstedt (76-73-79=228) only had two birdies in the tournament and shots a 79 in the finals and finished 8-over par. During the 54-hole event, Backstedt placed 48th.
Grantham (84-78-75=237) shot a 4-over par 75 in the finals and continued to improve. In her first event of the year, Grantham made a nine shot adjustment from the opening round to the finals. Despite a difficult start, Grantham finished tied for 64th.
Vanderbilt earned the team title after finishing 3-over par. Stacy Lewis of Arkansas and Alison Walshe of Arizona carded rounds of 6-under par 69 in the finals to tie for first in individual action.
UNM will compete in the Landfall Tradition Collegiate Golf Tournament on Oct. 27-29 to conclude the fall schedule. For more information about UNM athletics visit www.GoLobos.com.
