New Mexico sophomore goalkeeper Mike Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM; La Cueva HS) earned this week’s MPSF Brine Player of the Week for posting two shutouts in the Lobos’ opening MPSF series against Air Force and Denver. Graczyk blanked the Falcons in a 0-0 tie in two overtimes on Friday and a shut down the Pioneers in a 1-0 win on Sunday.
Graczyk made six saves, including a snuff on a penalty-kick, against Air Force and stopped four shots-on-goal against Denver. Those two shutouts brings Graczyk’s total to seven on the season. Graczyk also is the MPSF’s top keeper in goals against average at .482, giving up only five scores in 10 matches. The seven shutouts are already good for fourth-place on UNM’s season shutout list.
A Lobo has taken home four of the first six MPSF Brine Player of the Week honors. Other Lobos who have won the award this season include seniors Jeff Rowland (Sept. 5), Cody Hanna (Sept. 19) and Ben Ashwill (Sept. 26).
The Lobos (9-0-1, 1-0-1 MPSF) have been road warriors in 2005, playing eight of their first 10 matches away from the UNM Soccer Complex. That all changes on Friday, October 14, when UNM returns home for a three game stand. The Lobo women kick things off at 5:00 p.m. against San Diego State followed by the men’s match against Sacramento State. Both teams play at home again on Sunday, October 16, with the women facing UNLV at Noon (M.D.T.) followed by the men’s match against San Jose State.
