Albuquerque, N.M. – The University of New Mexico’s women’s diving team will compete in its first diving competition of the year this weekend at Arizona State’s Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The dual will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The Lobos’ three divers, sophomore Becca Barras (Kitchener, Ont.), junior Tracey Berghian (Phoenix, Ariz.) and newcomer Kaley Knafelc (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will be competing in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform events.

Barras and Berghian dominated the Mountain West Conference diving ranks last season. At the conference Championships, Barras finished second on the 1-meter board, third on the 3-meter and fourth on platform. Berghian also had a strong showing, finishing sixth on the 1-meter, fourth on the 3-meter and third on the platform. Based on her points total, Barras qualified for the zone meet in the 3-meter board and was just three points shy of qualifying in the 1-meter board.

Barras and Berghian finished 1-2 10 times in 2001-2002 and neither placed below fourth position at any competition.

ASU will feature five divers in this weekend’s dual. Sophomore transfer Trisha Tumlinson is expected to lead the Sun Devils after coming off a successful 2001 campaign at Kentucky where she was an All-American Honorable Mention selection in diving.

Next up for the UNM swimming and diving team is a meet at Wyoming on Oct. 17 and the Early Bird Invite in Fort Collins, Colo. on Oct. 18-19.
