Matt Frost joined the UNM women’s tennis program in August of 2019 as the new assistant for Women’s Tennis. He comes to New Mexico after serving in the same role for both men’s and women’s tennis at Lenoir-Rhyne during the 2018-19 season.

Frost hails from London, England and graduated from Drake University in 2015 with a degree in Business Management. While at Lenoir-Rhyne, Frost had an immediate impact on the Bears’ having a record-breaking season that saw the men’s side earn its first-ever national ranking, ending the year at No. 20 in the Division II rankings, and the women’s team finish in the national rankings for the first time as well, at #33.

Before his time at Lenoir-Rhyne, Frost served as part of the former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep’s travel team, both as hitting partner and coach. He has shared the court with many other top professionals as well including Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, Milos Raonic, Juan Martin del Potro, Eugenie Bouchard and Madison Keys. In addition to hitting on the pro tour, Frost has coached numerous athletes in the WTA rankings and been a part of the U14 Great Britain coaching staff.

“Undoubtedly, Matt is a great asset to UNM. His background playing Division I tennis, along with his experience hitting and coaching on the pro tour, has shaped his knowledge and understanding of the game tremendously. His input will be invaluable to our team. He is passionate about college tennis and his energy on court is contagious,” said Maes.  “Matt is well-respected and well-liked around the tennis world and will be able to help recruit the next generation of Lobo student-athletes who are driven on and off the court, ready to embrace our program’s culture of success.”

In 2015-16, Frost was the men’s assistant coach at Drake University, a season that saw the Bulldogs stay comfortably inside top 50 in the country and reach the finals of the MVC Conference Championships.

Frost played collegiately at both Southern Miss and Drake, earning a spot in both the singles and doubles NCAA rankings. While playing No. 1 singles and doubles at Southern Miss, he helped the team to a national ranking of #67. He was honored as an all-conference pick in both singles and doubles his sophomore year and made the final of the ITA Southern Regionals doubles event in 2012.

After transferring to Drake University for his junior and senior years, Frost continued his on-court success, winning two MVC conference championships and helping the team reach the 2nd round of the 2015 NCAA championships. He was named all-conference first team in singles and doubles both years with the Bulldogs and reached the semi-finals of the ITA Central Regional in 2013 singles event.
