AWENDAW, S.C. –– The No. 19 New Mexico men’s golf team concluded play Tuesday at the Hootie at Bulls Bay with the final round at Bulls Bay Golf Club. The Lobos shot 7-over during the third round to finish runner-up at the tournament at 9-under.
LSU won the event at 14-under, five shots ahead of the Lobos. Purdue (7-under), Charleston (6-under) and host South Carolina (4-under) rounded out the top five. It was New Mexico’s sixth top-three finish this season and second straight runner-up performance.
Matthew Watkins and Carson Herron both completed top-10 finishes at the tournament. Watkins finished T-4th at 5-under after shooting a final round 74. Herron shot the low round of the day for the Lobos, a 1-under 71, to finish T-9th at 3-under. Bastien Amat shot 73 in the final round, while Connor Adams shot 77 and Albert Boneta shot 78 on Tuesday.
“Today was a tough ending to a solid week of gold,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We still had a chance to win going into the back nine, but played those holes 7-over par. With that being said, there are way more positives than negatives this week. We put ourselves in contention both as a team and individually (Matthew Watkins) to win the tournament and that will pay dividends down the road.”
The Lobos will return to action April 12-13 when they conclude the regular season at the ASU Thunderbird Intercollegiate in Phoenix.
