CHAMPS!!!! Maggs and Pucalka Complete Dream Run

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Alex Maggs and Jan Pucalka finished off an amazing doubles run on Saturday morning with a straight set 7-5, 7-5 win over  Demetris Azoldis and Franco Ribero to win the double title of the USTA Pro Ciruit M15 Tournament hosted by The University of New Mexico and the City of Albuquerque, and being played at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.

In singles, Olle Wallin and Maciej Rajski advanced to the championship match on Sunday morning.  Maggs and Pucalka had a tough opening round match.  Entering as a wild card, they were slotted against the No. 2 seeds Chad Kissell and Emil Reinberg but they cruised right past them to a 6-2, 6-0 win.  That put UNM into the quarters, where the pair got a walkover win to advance to the semifinals.  There the tandem dropped its opening set to Kalman Boyd and Warren Wood 7-5 before battling back with a 7-6 (7-4) win in the second set.  That forced a 10-point superset tiebreaker, which they won 10-7 to move to the finals.

As college players in the event. Maggs and Pucalka are ineligible for any of the tournament’s prize money.
