Lobos Add Towson Transfer Zane Martin

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team has added Towson transfer Zane Martin to the roster. Due to NCAA transfer rules, Martin will sit out the 2018-19 season and be eligible for competition in 2019-20.

Martin, who led the Tigers with a team-best 19.8 points per game last season, was named MVP of the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic and earned All-CAA and NABC All-District 10 Second Team honors. He scored in double figures in 30 of the Tigers’ 32 games last season and averaged 3.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

“Zane has the type of personality that fits perfectly with our program,” head coach Paul Weir said. “There is a need on next year’s team for an immediate impact guard and he is that. I can’t think of a better prospect for our style of play and we look forward to Zane having a significant impact on Lobo Basketball.”

Martin earned CAA Player of the Week honors as a sophomore last season after becoming the first Towson player to record consecutive games of 30 or more points since 2007 that included a 35-point performance against William & Mary on Jan. 25. He followed that game up by scoring 30 of his 32 points against Elon in the second half, becoming the only player in Towson men’s basketball history to score at least 30 points in a single half. He also posted a career-best 36 points against Hofstra, marking a sophomore school record.

He finished his sophomore season with 635 points, seventh all-time in Towson history in single-season scoring, after posting 18 20-point outings, three games of 30 or more points and a 21-game streak in which he scored in double figures.

“I chose New Mexico because I felt as though this was the best (decision) for my game,” Martin said. “Coach Weir and the staff at UNM welcomed me in with open arms during my visit and I really felt like I belonged.”

Prior to attending Towson as a freshman, the Philadelphia, Pa. native attended Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School and helped his squad to three consecutive PIAA Class AAA Championships. He averaged 22 points, six rebounds and six assists while earning All-State, All-City and All-Southeastern Pennsylvania honors and racking up over 1,000 points.
