Lobo Student-Athletes Make it 20 Straight 3.0s

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico student-athletes continue to take care of business in the classroom as they registered a 3.19 cumulative grade point average, giving the department 13 straight semesters of at least a 3.1 GPA and 20 straight with at least a 3.0 GPA.

The 3.19 marked the 13th straight semester that UNM’s student-athletes have achieved at least a 3.1 grade point average, and it ran their streak of consecutive semesters with at least a 3.0 grade point average to 20.  Six of the 18 programs recorded GPAs in its top-five in program history in the Spring, and overall for the year 11 of the 18 programs recorded a top-five program GPA in either the Fall or the Spring.  UNM has 22 official sports, but for GPA purposes men’s indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and cross country are combined, as is the same for the women’s side.

The programs setting top five marks this year were baseball (Fall), men’s basketball (Fall), football (Spring), men’s golf (both semesters), men’s tennis (both semesters), beach volleyball (both semesters), women’s skiing (Fall), women’s soccer (both semesters), softball (Fall), women’s track (Fall) and volleyball (Spring).  Three programs; men’s golf, women’s soccer and beach volleyball, tied or set program records in the Spring.

The women’s programs were led by beach volleyball, which recorded a 4.00 GPA, the second highest in the department’s history, behind the 4.01 the women’s ski team recorded in the Spring of 2017.  On the men’s side, the golf team led the way with a 3.89 GPA, a program record and the highest GPA ever recorded by a men’s team at UNM.

Overall, UNM’s female student-athletes had a 3.48 GPA, the 22nd straight semester with at least a 3.3 GPA.  For the men, they recorded a 2.98 GPA, the 13th straight semester with a 2.9 or better GPA.

“I am continually amazed by the efforts that our student-athletes put into the classroom,” said Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez.  “There is tremendous pride in the academic successes of our student-athlete throughout our institution.  We have such a talented group of academic advisors that work with our student-athletes, led by Chris Baca, as well as a great faculty at The University of New Mexico.  Our student-athletes understand the commitment to excel on the field and in the classroom, and their effort into their classwork is a source of great pride for all Lobos.”
