New Mexico Game Notes | Google Drive Academic All-District

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In what has been a trying and difficult junior season for Jared Mang, the injured Lobo outfielder got a piece of good news on Thursday, as he was named to the Google Drive Academic All-District VII team.  The team, formerly known as CoSIDA Academic All-District, comprises all Division I schools in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Oklahoma.

Mang now advances to the national ballot for Google Drive Academic All-America honors.  Mang was a First Team Academic All-America selection last season.

A pair of injuries limited Mang to just 29 games this season.  In the second week of the season, Mang suffered a broken bone in his hand after being hit by a pitch.  That injury sidelined him for three weeks.  Then against San José State on April 27, Mang broke a bone in the same hand while attempting a diving catch.  That injury ended his season and he had surgery to repair the hand on Tuesday, May 8.

Mang was having a terrific season, as he was batting .284 over his 29 games with eight home runs in 102 at bats.  Despite missing 19 games so far, he still leads the team in runs batted in with 29.  He also leads the team in home runs, slugging percentage (.549), on base percentage (.438) and hit by pitches (9).

Jared was the only Mountain West student-athlete in District VII honored, but three others were selected in District 8, with Fresno State’s Zachary Ashford and San Diego State’s Chase Calibuig named to outfield spots, and Nevada’s Michael Echevia named to the District VIII designated hitter slot.

The Lobos are headed off to Colorado Springs for a weekend series, its final road series of the year.  All three games will be day games, with UNM and Air Force meeting at Falcon Field at 3 p.m. on Friday and then 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Lobos will throw their regular weekend starters in Justin Slaten on Friday, Cody Dye on Saturday and Nathaniel Garley on Sunday.  UNM was elimintated from the Mountain West Tournament chase on Sunday afternoon, but will have a chance at a spoiler role this weekend.  UNM does have one home series left, May 18-20 at Santa Ana Star Field against UC Davis.
