New Mexico Game Notes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Master’s Schmaster’s … this is New Mexico vs. Fresno State, and the Lobos are looking to get a little revenge afterdropping two of three to the Bulldogs in Fresno earlier last month.  The Lobos open the three-game set on Friday night at Santa Ana Star Field at 6:30 p.m., with games on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at high noon.  All three games will also be broadcast on the Mountain West Network as well as audio on 101.7 The Team, heard worldwide on the TuneIn Radio App or the 101.7 The Team App.  Robert Portnoy will have the call for the Lobos.

The Lobos lost two of three to the Bulldogs, with UNM’s lone win in dramatic fashion as Chris Dunn and Derek Marshall smacked leadoff homers to open the ninth inning with UNM down 4-2, tying it up.  Danny Collier then singled home Robby Campillo with two down, and Christian Tripp worked a perfect ninth.  However the rest of that weekend didn’t go as well as the Lobos lost 5-1 the next day after a great pitching performance from Edgar Gonzalez, and then 5-4 when UNM got to within 5-4 in the ninth with one out and Collier on third, but couldn’t drive him in for the tie.

That series was a part of a tough stretch that saw UNM on the road for five straight games.  Since that road swing in California however, UNM has picked up, especially with the team getting healthy.  UNM’s big three of Hayden Schilling, Jared Mang (who missed that whole series) and Collier are all healthy, and Connor Mang has turned into an offensive force, hitting in seven of his last eight.

UNM’s bullpen continues to be a strength, led at the back by Christian Tripp but certainly with plenty of pieces in from, including Drew Gillespie, who has a team-leading 13 appearances, and Malachi Emond, who leads with three wins.  Nathaniel Garley threw 6.1 innings of relief in a win over San Diego State last week, and could play a big role this weekend as well.

NOTE:  The broadcasts on 101.7 The Team will interrupt Master’s coverage all weekend.
