Eight Lobos Earn C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal
IRVING, TEXAS — The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team continues its tradition of academic success as the Lobos had eight student-athletes from the 2017 season honored with the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal, C-USA announced Friday. The players selected include Jason Beaulieu, Matt Dorsey, Jacobus McClure, Rio Murray, Aaron Scott, Simon Spangenberg, Michael Sprauer and Antoine Vial.
The Lobos’ led soccer teams in the league with their eight, followed by South Carolina which posted six.
Student-athletes who achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better are honored with the Commissioner’s Academic Medal. Three of the eight Lobos are multi-time honorees as Beaulieu, Dorsey and Spangenberg each earned the honor last season as well.
Beaulieu finished his UNM career as a decorated student-athlete posting a 3.99 GPA in civil engineering. The goalkeeper was a member of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team while also gathering multiple CoSIDA Academic All-District awards. Following his graduation from UNM in December, Beaulieu signed a professional contract with the Montreal Impact of the MLS.
Spangenberg was also a CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree this season, earning a spot on the second team with a 4.19 GPA in pre-mechanical engineering. He has also racked up CoSIDA Academic All-District and C-USA All-Academic Team accolades.
Dorsey is no stranger to academic honors as the redshirt-junior posts a 3.9 GPA. He has earned several academic honors including spots on the CoSIDA Academic All-District and C-USA All-Academic Teams.
This season marks the first honor for Vial, Scott, McClure, Murray and Sprauer as all five Lobos were new to the squad in 2017.
The Lobos’ next spring contest is set to take place on Saturday, April 14 when the program hosts its annual Alumni Game at Robertson Field.
