ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team looks to avenge a loss earlier this season at San Jose State when the Lobos host the Spartans 2 p.m. Saturday at Dreamstyle Arena.
The Lobos fell to SJSU 95-86 on Jan. 6 in a game the Lobos led after the first quarter and the half before being outscored 53-37 in the second half. UNM was led by Jaisa Nunn’s 31 points and 10 rebounds while San Jose State was led by a career-high 27 points from Myzhanique Ladd.
The Lobos used a balanced effort along with strong defense to snap its three-game losing streak and defeat Utah State, 80-47, Wednesday night at Dreamstyle Arena.
UNM had four players finish in double figures, led by Jaisa Nunn’s 12th double-double of the season as she finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds (her fifth game of having 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds). Combine that with UNM holding the Aggies to 18 first-half points – the lowest point total the Lobos have held a team to in the first half this season – and it was a strong all-around effort by the Lobos.
To go along with Nunn’s 20 points and 12 rebounds, Tesha Buck had 15 points (5-for-10 from 3-point range), three assists and two steals, Madi Washington finished with 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting from beyond the arc (tying a career high for 3-pointers), Alex Lapeyrolerie had 11 points and drained three 3-pointers while Laneah Bryan added eight points, two rebounds and two assists. Cherise Beynon, after scoring a combined 71 points in the previous two games, controlled the tempo for the Lobos and had her fifth double-digit assist game of the season with 12 to go along with four points and three steals.
Since defeating the Lobos, San Jose State has dropped five of its last six games – including their last four games. The Spartans fell to UNLV at home 80-53 on Wednesday night – in big part by being outscored 23-10 in the first quarter and 30-11 in the third quarter. Megan Anderson was the only SJSU player in double figures with 12 points.
The Spartans are the third-leading scoring team in the conference at 69.8 points per game (the Lobos lead the Mountain West at 83.3 points per contest), but are last in the conference in points allowed per game at 83.5 (UNM is second-to-last at 72.2). The Spartans are second in the MW in 3-pointers made per game at 8.2 (UNM is first at 9.7) while SJSU is last in the conference in rebounding margin at minus-10.2.
Taylor Turney leads the Spartans in scoring at 13.5 points per game while also leading the team in assists (85). Myzhanique Ladd is also in double figures in scoring at 12.5 points per game – doing a lot of damage at the free-throw line as she’s 83-for-113 from the charity stripe on the season (73 percent). Ladd also leads the team in rebounding at 7.1 rebounds per game while she’s third in assists (52).
