Lobos Post Nine Wins at Aggie Invitational

Las Cruces, N.M. — Three players represented the University of New Mexico men’s tennis team at the annual Aggie Invitational hosted by New Mexico State and ITA. Senior Jorge Escutia, junior Michael Tran and freshman Philip Stockmar each competed at the tournament Sept. 15-17.
 
Escutia posted wins over Hunter Holeman of Alebine Christian 6-3, 6-3, and Arizona Christian’s Alberto Lapiedra 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation draw of the Crimson Singles flight. Stockmar also picked up some wins over Gary Rendek of Mesa Community College, 6-4, 6-4, and Zachary Grabovic of Western New Mexico University, 6-3, 6-2 also in the consolation draw of the the Crimson Singles flight.
 
Tran competed in the White Singles flight and posted wins over Santiago Galeffi of Arizona Christian 6-4, 6-1 in the first round and Pablo Santibanez of Western New Mexico 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He was defeated by New Mexico State’s Mauricio Benitez 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals.
 
Escutia and Stockmar also competed in the Crimson Doubles flight of the tournament. The duo was defeated by Lapeidra and Daniel Superlano of Arizona Christian University 8-6 in the first round but posted wins over Sergi Espias and Alejandro Rosas of New Mexico State 8-7 in the consolation draw. They went on to defeat Cole Lawson and Hunter Holeman of Abilene Christian 8-6 followed by another win over Enzo Douillac and Jesse Miritello of Arizona Christian 8-4, securing the 9th place victory and win.
 
“This was a great first tournament for us to get some match practice and experience against a variety of different schools,” assistant coach Robin Goodman said. “We improved throughout the tournament and built confidence, picking up nine wins in total over the weekend. We have to continue to focus on our consistency in practice and learn how to implement what we are learning into match play. This tournament was invaluable for our players and I’m excited to see them compete again in our Lobo Invitational at our home courts in two weeks.” 
 
The Lobos host and compete in the annual Lobo Invitational set to take place Sept. 29 – Oct. 1 at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium. The ITA All-American Championships will also take place Sept. 30 – Oct. 4 in Tulsa, Okla. More details regarding players, opponents and schedule will be announced in the upcoming days.
