Hix named MW Offensive Player of the Week

MOUNTAIN WEST RELEASE

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of New Mexico sophomore Jessie Hix was rewarded for her dominant play in the box this past weekend while helping the Lobos go 2-0 by being selected the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The Albuquerque native scored a combined three goals in helping UNM defeat Houston (3-2) on Friday and Northern Arizona (4-0) on Sunday. The midfielder scored all three goals on headers, one against the Cougars on Friday to give the Lobos a 2-1 advantage (off a corner kick from Jessica Nelson) in the second half and two (one in each half) against NAU during the Lobos’ top scoring output of the season (assists coming from Alexa Cabrales and Claire Lynch).

As the Lobos’ holding midfielder, Hix was also key in limiting NAU on Sunday to just four shots with only one on goal (the Lobos took 26 shots with 11 on goal).

The three goals came on six shots for Hix and are her first three goals of the season as she’s now the team leader in the category. Hix is the first UNM women’s soccer player to earn MW Player of the Week honors since Emily Chavez won it for the week of Oct. 26, 2015.

The victories moved the Lobos to 5-3 on the season and up to No. 103 in the latest RPI (third in the Mountain West behind UNLV and Utah State).

UNM opens Mountain West action 7:30 p.m. Friday against defending champion UNLV at the UNM Soccer Complex.
