Owens Named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Watch List

TYLER, Texas — Tyrone Owens, UNM’s junior running back from Manor Texas that rushed for 1,097 yards as a sophomore in 2016, has been named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Watch List, announced by Tyler Chamber of Commerce.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award was established in 2012 “to recognize the nation’s college offensive player of the year who meets the awards criteria and to encourage student-athletes to succeed on and off the field while having the drive and the tenacity to persist and overcome adversity and injury in the pursuit of reaching their goals. The award honors the legacy of Texas legend Earl Campbell and recognizes his home community of Tyler, Texas.”

Additionally, the award is limited to players who were born in the state of Texas, or either attended high school, junior college, or college in Texas.

Last year Owens had a breakout sophomore season with 1,097 yards and seven touchdowns on 137 carries.  It was the 12th-most rushing yards in a single-season in UNM history, and he teamed up with teammate Teriyon Gipson to become the first Lobos to hit 1,000 yards rushing in the same season.

Last year the Earl Campbell Award went to a running back for the first time as D’Onta Foreman of Texas earned the honor.  The prior three years quarterbacks won the award with Baylor’s Bryce Petty in 2013, TCU’s Trevone Boykin in 2014 and Houston’s Greg Ward, Jr. in 2015.

Owens is one of seven starters returning for the Lobos on offense this season.  Lobo season tickets are currently on sale, starting as low as $86 at the Ticket Office at Dreamstyle Arena, or by calling 925-LOBO.  Single-game tickets go on sale exclusively on golobos.com and unmtickets.com this weekend, and at Dreamstyle Arena starting next Monday morning.
