Men's Golf Earns GCAA President’s Special Recognition

GCAA Release

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team received on Wednesday President’s Special Recognition status from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

The Lobos were one of 19 Division I men’s golf teams to earn the recognition, which is awarded to teams that registered a team GPA of 3.5 or better during the 2016-17 academic year.

New Mexico, under head coach Glen Millican, set successive program records in GPA during the 2016-17 academic year, notching a 3.63 GPA during the Fall 2016 semester and a 3.70 GPA during the Spring 2017 semester.

For both semesters, men’s golf led UNM Athletics with the highest team GPA among men’s sports. The team has registered 20 straight semesters with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

UNM, which also advanced to the NCAA Championships this season, was one of just three schools to both qualify for the national championships and earn President’s Special Recognition status.

The Lobos were also the only Mountain West team honored with President’s Special Recognition status.

Additionally, Millican’s Lobos saw five golfers named Academic All-Mountain West earlier this week, with All-American Andrej Bevins, Sean Carlon, Andre Garcia, Samuel Kim and Ben Tolsma being recognized.

Garcia, Kim and Tolsma were also accorded MW Scholar-Athlete honors along with Isaac Alderete, Sam Dickey and Mark MacGrath.
