Wehan, Fisher Tearing up Turf

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Former Lobos Oniel Fisher and Chris Wehan have been making headlines for all the right reasons. Fisher, who is in the middle of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the Jamaican National Team and Wehan, who just claimed the Fans’ Choice Midseason USL Rookie of the Year honor, are both enjoying stellar post-collegiate success.

“What an honor it is to play for your country’s senior national team in such a prestigious international event,” UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “Oniel has played a big role in Jamaica’s advancement into the Quarterfinals. He continues to impress in the MLS and on the international stage and I’m really happy for him.”

Fisher helped Jamaica advance to the CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarterfinals with a 1-1 draw against El Salvador in group play. The squad will kick off quarterfinal competition against Canada tonight, July 20 at 5:30 p.m. MT at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Fisher and the Jamaica National Team earned a 2-0 victory over Curaçao and a 0-0 draw against Mexico prior to the match against El Salvador. Fisher played for the Lobos in 2013 and 2014, seeing 2,960 minutes on the pitch for UNM in 39 games.

Wehan has been a force to be reckoned with in his inaugural season in the USL. The rookie graduated from UNM this past December as the Lobos’ captain and currently competes for Reno 1868 FC where he reached a tie for the league lead in assists (7) and ranked as high as second in chances created at the midpoint of the season. Wehan was recently named Fan’s Choice USL Midseason Player of the Year by a fan vote after his outstanding introductory performance.

“Chris has quickly developed a reputation as one of the most exciting players in the USL,” Coach Fishbein said. “I’m excited for Chris and am confident he will continue to find success the remainder of the season and into the future. There are definitely exciting times ahead for Chris!”

During his time as a Lobo, Wehan racked up the accolades and secured his place in the UNM record book. He finished his career with 70 points on 31 goals and eight assists starting 78 of 80 games in the Cherry and Silver.
