Lobos Pace MW with 188 Academic All-Conference Selections

Complete List of Academic All-Mountain West Recipients

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — For the fifth consecutive academic year, the University of New Mexico led the Mountain West with 188 Academic All-Mountain West selections, including a league-leading 128 spring selections.

The Lobos’ 188 total honorees this academic year constitute the third-highest number of selections in department history, with all three coming in the last three years (199 in 2016 and 189 in 2015).

Additionally, New Mexico saw eight teams out of the 11 spring sports recognized by the Mountain West rank in the top three of their sports.

Baseball, softball and men’s track & field finished tops in the MW in their respective sports, with women’s golf tying for first. Both men’s and women’s tennis tied for second, with men’s basketball and men’s golf ranking third in the conference.

Lobo baseball’s 21 Academic All-MW honorees are the highest total for that sport in the history of the MW, dating back to 2003-04, while softball’s 14 selections are tied for most in program and MW history.

UNM men’s track & field (24 selections) and women’s golf (six) also set or tied program records, respectively. Women’s tennis’s seven honorees is tied for third-most in program history.

Rounding out the contingent of spring teams were men’s basketball (three selections), women’s basketball (six), men’s golf (five), swimming & diving (18), men’s tennis (six) and women’s track & field (18).

Overall, UNM’s 128 spring selections are the 10th-most in conference history, but the second-most among current members. UNM had 139 spring selections last season, and departed league member BYU had the eight highest totals in conference history.

In the fall, where UNM tied for third in the MW with 60 selections, football totalled 19 selections, with women’s soccer (16), volleyball (nine), women’s cross country (eight) and men’s cross country (eight) also posting strong numbers.
