ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A pair of hot programs square off 1 p.m. Saturday as The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team hosts Nevada at Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.
The Lobos are riding a program-best 13-1 start to their 2017-18 campaign while Nevada (8-4, 1-0) is on a five-game winning streak heading into Saturday’s key conference contest.The Lobos opened Mountain West play Thursday night with an 88-59 victory over Air Force at the USAF Academy in Colorado.
UNM saw 12 of its 13 players score against the Falcons with Jaisa Nunn leading the way with 18 points and nine rebounds followed by Alex Lapeyrolerie’s 16 points and freshman Madi Washington’s 13 points off of the bench.
To go along with the three players in double figures, freshman Antonia Anderson tied career highs with nine points and seven rebounds while Cherise Beynon finished with seven points, four assists and four steals.
The Lobos shot 47 percent (31-for-66) from the field, 6-for-21 from 3-point range (28.6 percent) and were 20-for-24 from the free-throw line (83.3 percent). On the other end, UNM held Air Force to 39.7 percent shooting from the field (23-for-58).
Nevada opened conference play with a convincing victory as well, defeating Fresno State at home, 90-73. The Wolf Pack had a pair of players finish with a double-double as Teige Zeller had 20 points and 12 rebounds while Terae Briggs had 10 points and 11 rebounds. They were two of five players to finish in double figures.
Nevada comes to Albuquerque riding a five-game win streak as two of its four losses this season are to ranked opponents in UConn and Oregon State.
The Wolf Pack have been led by Teige Zeller as she’s averaging 14.1 points and 7.4 reobunds per game – both team highs. Camariah King is averaging 9.9 points per contest – though she’s primarily come off the bench this season. Halie Bergman and T Moe are both averaging 9.3 points per contest with Bergman leading the team with 26 3-pointers on 64 attempts (40.6 percent) while Moe leads the Wolf Pack with 40 assists. It’s been a balanced effort for Nevada as seven players are averaging 7.5 points or more per game this season.
SERIES HISTORY
The Lobos are 8-3 all-time against Nevada, including winning the last five matchups (last loss March 1, 2014, in Albuquerque). UNM is 4-1 at home against the Wolf Pack. Last season the Lobos were 2-0 against Nevada, winning in Albuquerque, 59-50, and in Reno, 69-63.
THE COACHES
The Lobos are led by head coach Mike Bradbury in his second season with UNM, his 11th season overall. Bradbury posts a career record of 206-133 and is 28-15 at the helm of the Lobos.
Nevada is under first-year Wolf Pack coach Amanda Levens who is 8-4 this season. Overall as a collegiate head coach, Levens is 50-80.
