Nunn named Mountain West Player of the Week

MOUNTAIN WEST RELEASE

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A near flawless – and Lobo-record – performance by Jaisa Nunn that helped The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team defeat a ranked opponent highlighted a week that saw the junior average 17.7 points and 10.7 rebounds and be selected the Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday.

Nunn broke a 35-year-old New Mexico scoring record by piling up 39 points (the old record was 35 set by Yvonne McKinnon in 1979) and adding 13 rebounds in the Lobos’ 88-87 victory over No. 16 Marquette on Nov. 13 at Dreamstyle Arena – including converting on a three-point play with 1.8 seconds remaining to give UNM the victory. The Kirkland, Wash., native was 14-for-15 from the field and 11-for-12 from the free-throw line while committing no turnovers in 34 minutes of play.

Also during the Lobos’ 3-0 week (UNM is 4-0 on the season and received votes in this week’s AP Top 25 Poll), she added a double-double against New Mexico State in an 86-75 victory Saturday with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Overall in 71 minutes of play, Nunn didn’t commit a turnover, shot 93.8 percent from the free-throw line (15-for-16) and 65.5 percent from the field.

This is Nunn’s first Mountain West Player of the Week honor and it’s the second week in a row the Lobos have earned the Mountain West Player of the Week as Cherise Beynon’s near triple-double in UNM’s season opener earned her the award the first week. It’s the first time the Lobos have had multiple players win the honor in the same season since 2013-14 and the first time the Lobos have had players win it in back-to-back weeks since 2009-10 (Amy Beggin and Georonika Jackson).

The victory over Marquette was the Lobos’ first over a ranked opponent since beating No. 25 SMU in 2010 and the highest ranked opponent they have beat since defeating No. 16 BYU in 2006. Also during the week the Lobos set a school record with 107 points against Northern New Mexico on Wednesday, breaking the record of 106 that had stood since 1979 (and the first time the Lobos reached the 100-point mark since 2005). UNM has scored 86 or more points in four consecutive games for the first time since 1979.

The Lobos return to action 7 p.m. Friday when they open the UNM Thanksgiving Tournament against Wichita State (UC Irvine and Illinois play earlier in the day at 4:30 p.m.). UNM takes on UC Irvine 2:30 p.m. Saturday (Wichita State and Illinois play at noon) and the Lobos wrap up the event 2:30 p.m. Sunday against Illinois (Wichita State and UC Irvine play at noon).

UNM will have its Black Friday weekend sale for the UNM Thanksgiving Tournament as fans can get Lobo Level tickets for just $5 per game! The UNM ticket office will be open this holiday week Monday from 8:30-5 p.m., Tuesday from 8:30-8 p.m. (for the men’s game that night), Wednesday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., closed for Thanksgiving (Thursday), Friday from 3:30-8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
