ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team set a school scoring record thanks to a balanced effort to beat in-state foe Northern New Mexico 107-66 Wednesday night at Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.
The Lobos (3-0), coming off one of their biggest wins in recent program history after defeating No. 16 Marquette 88-87 Monday night, continued rolling offensively as they passed the old record of 106 set March 3, 1979, against Northern Arizona. It’s also the first time the Lobos have reached the 100-point mark since beating Morgan State 101-22 Jan. 4, 2005.
All 13 players played at least 10 minutes and none more than 21 while 12 players scored – four reaching double figures – in the Lobos’ 41-point victory.
“I’m happy we got to get a lot of kids that haven’t played much so far extended minutes,” UNM coach Mike Bradbury said. “They got long minutes, long stretches at one time. I think that was very beneficial to us.”
Freshman Madi Washington paced UNM with 27 points – the second-most points scored off the bench by a Lobo player in program history and tied for the sixth-most points scored by a freshman in UNM history. Washington went 5-for-8 from 3-point range and was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the victory.

Laneah Bryan had 13 points (one point off her career high) and added three assists for the Lobos. The senior guard said the players didn’t know they had broken the school scoring record.
“I didn’t know until I sat down (in the media room),” Bryan said. “It’s awesome, but we don’t really pay attention to those things. We just try to focus on us and focus on what we do.”
Cherise Beynon had 11 points and added five assists and three steals for the Lobos while Emily Lines had 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
NNMC (2-5) used a pair of early 3-pointers to keep it close with UNM at 9-8 before the Lobos went on a 14-4 run to end the first quarter – capped by a Jaedyn De La Cerda three-point play and a pair of Washington free throws – to lead 23-12 heading into the second.
The Lobos used a 12-0 run in the second capped by a Washington 3-pointer to push their advantage at the half to 50-26. UNM cruised from there, scoring 56 points in the second half to come away with the victory.
Up next for the Lobos is the Rio Grande Rivalry against New Mexico State 2 p.m. Saturday at Dreamstyle Arena. The game is also UNM’s annual N7 Game – with a special deal for fans which will be released Thursday.
