Men's Hoops to Host Omaha in Nike N7 Game Tuesday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will look to open the season 2-0 for the sixth-straight year when it takes on the Omaha Mavericks at Dreamstyle Arena Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Tuesday night’s game will also mark the Lobos’ special Nike N7 game.
UNM will be celebrating Nike N7 and American Indian Night on Tuesday to honor Native American Heritage Month. The Lobos will be playing in their custom turquoise uniforms. The color turquoise represents harmony, friendship and fellowship in Native American culture.
Special promotions for Tuesday’s game include $10 tickets in bench rows 1-10 for fans wearing turquoise. We will have a Nike N7 jersey presentation to Notah Begay III during pregame. The singing of our national anthem will be performed in Navajo by Stacie Barney. There will also be a jersey auction on the north concourse with proceeds benefiting the NB3 Foundation and UNM American Indian Student Services.
The Lobos are entering this week coming off of a record-breaking 147-76 victory over Northern New Mexico on Saturday. The Lobos broke the previous record for mosts points in a game, which was 136 set on Nov. 23, 1990 against Texas-Arlington. In addition, the Lobos tied the record for highest victory margin (71) and most assists in a game (40).
Eight Lobos scored in double figures on Saturday including junior Chris McNeal who posted a team-high 24 points, 10 assists and registered the first Lobo assist/point double-double since 2014.
Junior Troy Simons posted the first 5-steal individual performance since 2011 while junior Anthony Mathis went 5-for-9 from 3-point-range for a new career-best. Mathis was one of several Lobos to reach new career highs Saturday.
SERIES HISTORY
The Lobos and the Mavericks will meet for the first time on Tuesday.
THE COACHES
Tuesday’s contest will be a battle of the new and the experienced as first-year Lobo head coach Paul Weir will take on Omaha’s Derrin Hansen who is in his 13th season with the Mavericks. Hansen is 197-168 in his career with Omaha while Weir earned his first win as a Lobo on Saturday and posts an overall career record of 27-6.
