New Mexico Grasps Three Wins at Lobo Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team wrapped up the Lobo Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 1 at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium. Both doubles teams and one singles player earned top three finishes for the Lobos.

In doubles, New Mexico’s duo of Philip Stockmar and Sean Baklini secured victories over Denver, New Mexico State, and Air Force. They fell to Northern Arizona but still earned a first place finish in flight one. Jorge Escutia and Michael Tran went undefeated to earn a top ranking against all four teams in the second flight. 

In singles, Escutia earned a first place finish in the second flight after going 2-2 in the flight. Escutia finished with a combined 6-2 in both singles and doubles play. Flight four’s Tran finished second overall behind Denver’s Sean Huynh, while also racking up wins over Northern Arizona, New Mexico State, and Air Force.
 
Flight three’s Baklini placed third and went 2-2 with wins over Northern Arizona’s Chris Steele 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (5) and Air Force’s Matt Ghering 6-4, 7-6 (4). He fell to to New Mexico State’s Sergi Espias 6-7, 6-3, 0-6 and Denver’s Pedro Fernandez Del Valle 2-6, 2-6. Stockmar also placed third with wins over Air Force’s Luke Sanderson 7-6 (6), 7-5 and Denver’s Jesse Ruder-Hook 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. He fell to Northern Arizona’s Felix Schumann 3-6, 6-2, 6-7 (3) and also had a W/O loss against New Mexico State’s Christofer Goncalves.
 
Lobos Tim Buttner, Ricky Hernandez Tong, and Dominic West are currently competing in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Hernandez Tong and West qualified in both singles and doubles and will be competing on Monday, Oct. 2 in the First Round of singles and Round of 64 in doubles. Buttner recieved his first two college wins of his career against two big programs. He defeated Akos Kotorman of Baylor 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the Round of 256 and Stefano Tsorotiotis of Oklahoma 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in Round of 128 but fell to Tim Dollman of Alabama Birmingham 6-1, 6-2 in the Round of 64 of the pre-qualifying rounds.

After this week, the Lobos will head to Provo, Utah for the ITA Regional Championships Oct. 18-21 on the campus of BYU to conclude the fall season.
