New Mexico Looks to Rebound Against UNLV

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will look to rebound after two losses. The Lobos will face UNLV Tuesday at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be available on ESPN3.

The Lobos are coming off two straight losses, falling at Utah State, 79-75 and 105-104 inside WisePies Arena on Saturday to Nevada. The loss to Nevada was the first inside WisePies Arena. The Lobos are now 7-1 on their home court.

Tim Williams and Elijah Brown led the Lobos over the week. Williams averaged 28.0 points per game last week, scoring 30 at Utah State. Brown and Williams both had 26 points against Nevada on Saturday.

New Mexico comes into the match-up with a 9-7 overall record and 2-2 record in the Mountain West. As a team, they are shooting 46.9 percent, which ranks second in the conference. They rank first in the Mountain West in Free Throw Shooting at 75 percent. That percentage is also 40th among the nation.

The Lobos are averaging 76.4 points per game which is fourth among the league. In conference games only, the Lobos are tied second with an 81.2 shooting percentage.

Tim Williams continues to lead the Lobos in the scoring column, averaging 19.1 points per game. That average is second best among the MW. Brown is second on the squad averaging 17.3 points per game.

UNLV comes into the game with an 8-9 overall record and 1-3 record in league play. Jalen Poyser leads UNM in scoring at 13.5 points per game. He is shooting 40.4 percent from the field, 37.2 percent from the three and 84.4 percent from the foul line.

As a team, the Runnin’ Rebels are shooting 41.1 percent from the field, 33.9 percent from the three-point line and 69.5 percent from the three. They average 71.9 points per game and are giving up 74.9 point per game to their opponents.

ABOUT THE COACHES
Head coach Craig Neal is in his fourth season as head coach of the Lobos. He owns a 68-45 career record at UNM. Marvin Menzies, who used to coach at New Mexico State, is in his first year with UNLV. He is 8-9 on the season and 206-120 in his career.

ABOUT THE SERIES
New Mexico will go up against UNLV for the 57th time in program history. The series dates back to Jan. 17, 1976 and UNLV leads the all-time record 32-24. Inside the Pit, the Lobos are 13-11 against the Running’ Rebels. The first 12 meetings took play between 1976-1982. The series took a 16-year break before the two programs became conference opponents in the 1997-98 season. The Lobos have won seven of the last 11 meetings.
