Lobos Look to Get Back on Track at UNLV

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will look to get back on track at UNLV Wednesday night at 8 p.m. PT/9 p.m. MT. The game will air on CBS Sports Network (Comcast 278/838 HD, DISH 158, DirecTV 221).

The Lobos (13-9, 6-4 MW) are coming off their first loss in five games, falling at Nevada last Saturday, 82-65. Elijah Brown and Tim Williams combined for 36 points, each scoring 18 points. But the Lobos turned the ball over 17 times which allowed Nevada to score 20 points.

Wednesday will be a new test for the Lobos as two of their starters will be out due to injury. Tim Williams and Dane Kuiper will not be in uniform Wednesday night.

The Lobos will look to leader Elijah Brown to continue to lead the team. He leads the team in scoring at 18.5 points per game and in assists at 3.0 per game. Brown is shooting 40.1 percent from the field and 81.3 percent from the foul line.

As team, the Lobos are shooting 47.2 percent from the field, which is second among the league. In conference games only, the Lobos are first in the conference in field goal percentage at 47.7 percent. In league games, the Lobos are averaging 77.3 points per game as a team, which is also second among the 11 teams. But the Lobos’ strength is at the foul line as they lead the conference and are 26th in the nation with a 75.9 percentage on the season.

UNLV comes into the game with a 10-12 overall record and 3-6 record in the Mountain West. Since they came to The Pit on Jan. 10, they have gone 2-3 in league games and are currently on a two-game skid, losing at Wyoming and at San Jose State.

Jalen Poyser leads UNLV in the scoring column at 12.5 points per game. He is shooting 35.8 percent from the field, 32.7 percent from the three and 83.3 percent from the foul line. Jovan Mooring (11.1), Tyrell Green (11.0) and Christian Jones (10.9) are the other Runnin’ Rebels scoring in double-figures.

As a team, UNLV is shooting 39.9 percent from the field, 33.6 percent from the three-point line and 69.9 percent from the foul line. The Runnin’ Rebels average 71.3 points per game and are giving up 74.1 to their opponents.

In conference action, Jovan Mooring is leading the team with 14.7 points per game. He is shooting 43.8 percent from the three in league games. Christian Jones is second with 11.4 points per game in conference action. Uche Ofoegbu is shooting 50 percent from the three in league.

ABOUT THE COACHES
Craig Neal is in his fourth season with the Lobos and owns a 72-47 career record. He is the first coach in MW to win on the road at San Diego State, Boise State and CSU in the same season. Marvin Menzies, who previously coached at New Mexico State, is in his first season with the Runnin’ Rebels and owns a 208-123 career record.

ABOUT THE SERIES
This will be the 58th meeting in program history between the Lobos and the Runnin’ Rebels. The series dates back to Jan. 17, 1976 and UNLV leads the all-time record 33-24. The meeting will be the 31st meeting in Las Vegas and the Lobos are 11-19 on the road. The Lobos have earned a win over the Runnin’ Rebels for the last five straight seasons, starting with a season sweep of UNLV in the 2011-12 season. Last time against the Rebels on Jan. 10, the Lobos fell 71-66.
