ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team looks to remain undefeated in the Mountain West on Wednesday night as it hosts the Utah State Aggies at 7 p.m. at WisePies Arena – The Pit.
Special ticket promotions for Wednesday’s game include “Daddy – Daughter Date Night.” Fathers and their daughters will be admitted to the matchup at a price of just $5. Call or visit the WisePies Arena Ticket Office for more information.
The Lobos got back to .500 on Saturday night with an outstanding 43-point victory over the visiting San Diego State Aztecs, 85-42, and look to improve to 3-0 in conference play in Wednesday night’s showdown. UNM is one of just three teams that have gone 2-0 in Mountain West play to open the conference schedule.
Highlight’s from Saturday night’s game:
The Utah State Aggies are entering the game 8-5 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West action after falling at Boise State 76-56 to open their conference schedule. The Aggies are coming off of their first win in four games, a 65-62 victory over Air Force on Saturday.
UNM is led offensively by junior guard Cherise Beynon who averages 15.4 points, 7.5 assists and 8.2 rebounds per game. She is followed closely by senior Richelle van der Keijl who posts 14.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Beynon has scored 20 points or more in five games this season while van der Keijl has racked up double digits in eight, including three 20 games.
The Aggies are led by a starting five that is the youngest in the NCAA this season, featuring three freshmen and two sophomores. Sophomore Rachel Brewster is the only member of the squad to average in double figures thus far, posting 12.3 points per game. She is followed by freshmen Shannon Dufficy with 9.9 ppg and Eliza West, 7.0 ppg.
The Coaches:
The Lobos are led by head coach Mike Bradbury in his first season with UNM, his 10th season overall. Bradbury posts a career record of 184-123 and is 6-6 at the helm of the Lobos.
Utah State is coached by Jerry Finkbeiner in his fifth season with the Aggies. Finkbeiner is 63-75 at USU and has amassed a 537-317 record in his 28th season.
Series History:
The Lobos are 13-6 overall against Utah State including a 7-2 record at home in WisePies Arena – The Pit. In the squads’ history, the Lobos lost the first two matches (1975 and 1976) before going on a 10-win streak from January 1977 – February 1987. The teams went 26 seasons before facing off again on January 29, 2014. Since the teams’ reconnecting, the Lobos are 3-4 against the Aggies including a 2-1 record at home.
Last time the teams met resulted in a close home victory for the Lobos, 73-70, in The Pit on February 10, 2016. Last season, the teams split their meetings with UNM falling on the road in January, 72-59, before powering back for the win in Albuquerque a month later.
