ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After claiming an 84-71 win over Colorado State Saturday, the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will look to continue that momentum as it heads to Boise State on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. MT and will air on ESPNU (Comcast 281/815 HD, Dish 141, DirecTV 208).
The Lobos built momentum at Colorado State Saturday as they snapped a three-game losing streak. The Lobos played solid for 40 minutes and received contributions across the board. Elijah Brown led the Lobos with 25 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Tim Williams finished with 15 points while Dane Kuiper and Damien Jefferson both added 10 points each.
On the season, the Lobos are shooting 47.5 percent from the field, which ranks second among the Mountain West. From the three, the Lobos are shooting 32.4 percent. But one of the biggest strengths New Mexico has is shooting from the foul line. The Lobos continue to be one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country. They are third in total makes (374) and fifth in attempts (500). Both of those numbers are first among the league.
Tim Williams continues to lead the Lobos in the scoring column. He is second among the conference in points per game at 18.3, behind Nevada’s Marcus Marshall’s 21.3 ppg. Williams is second in the Mountain West in field goal percentage at 59.3 percent. Elijah Brown is fifth in the league in scoring at 17.5.
It will be another tough road test for the Lobos as Boise State is first in the conference with a 4-1 record. Overall, they are 11-5. The Broncos are coming off their first loss in conference action as they fell to Fresno State 89-80.
As a team, Boise State is shooting 44.9 percent from the field, 33.7 percent from the three and 69.1 percent from the foul line. The Broncos are allowing 67.6 points per game, which is second among the league.
The Broncos are led by Chandler Hutchison in the scoring and rebounding columns. He is averaging 18.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg on the season. He is shooting 53.1 percent from the field and 40.6 percent from the three. Paris Austin and Nick Duncan are also averaging in double figures at 11.4 and 10.5 ppg, respectively.
ABOUT THE COACHES
Craig Neal is in his fourth season as head coach of the Lobos. He owns a 69-46 record at UNM. Leon Rice is in his seventh season with Boise State. He has a 133-80 record as the Broncos head coach.
ABOUT THE SERIES
This will be the 12th meeting between the Lobos and the Broncos. The Lobos hold an 8-3 record against the Broncos and are 3-2 against them on the road. Last season, the Lobos claimed both games of the series, including a thrilling 80-78 comeback win over the Broncos at home. That victory is one of the greatest comebacks in Lobo history. The Lobos were down by 15 with six minutes to go. Prior to Boise State joining the Mountain West in the 2011-12 season, the Lobos had never faced the Broncos.
