ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Despite suffering its first conference loss of the 2016-17 season on Wednesday, The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team is looking to rebound on Saturday afternoon and continue the best start to Mountain West play in program history.
The Lobos are now 8-7 overall, 4-1 in the Mountain West and will take on defending Mountain West Champion Colorado State (11-5, 3-1 MW) at WisePies Arena – The Pit at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday’s game also marks Pack the Pit day, tickets start at just $2.
UNM continues to be led by junior Cherise Beynon who averages 15.8 points and 7.5 rebounds on the season. Beynon is just 67 points shy of 1,000 and 36 rebounds short of 500. Reaching both marks would make her just the 15th Lobo in the history of the program to do so.
Colorado State is led by Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year Ellen Nystrom. She leads the Rams with 16.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as one of two players on the squad to average in double figures.
The Coaches:
The Lobos are led by head coach Mike Bradbury in his first season with UNM, his 10th season overall. Bradbury posts a career record of 186-124 and is 8-7 at the helm of the Lobos.
Colorado State is coached by Ryun Williams in his fifth season. He has amassed a 101-42 record with the Rams and a 359-195 career record.
Series History:
The Lobos are 40-35 overall against the Rams including a significant 23-12 advantage at home in WisePies Arena – The Pit. UNM is 1-5 against Colorado State in the teams’ past six meetings, the only win coming on Feb. 11, 2015 at home, 67-40. In their last meeting, the Rams earned a 60-42 victory to knock the Lobos out of the 2015-16 Mountain West Tournament in the second round.
The last time UNM and CSU met in The Pit, the Lobos fell by just one point, 49-48 on Feb. 24, 2016.
