ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team (8-6, 4-0 MW) extended its win streak to four on Saturday with a win over Nevada and is looking to tie the program record 5-0 conference start on Wednesday night at UNLV (11-5, 2-2 MW). The Lobos have been 5-0 in conference play just once in the history of the program, in the 1998-99 season when UNM went 24-7, 12-2 in the WAC.
The Lobos claimed a 69-63 victory on the road at Nevada on Saturday. Junior Cherise Beynon led the Lobos with 25 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals while going 6-of-10 from the 3-point arc to tie her career-high threes in a game. She was followed by freshman Mykiel Burleson who scored 18 points, including 16 in the first quarter, and brought down seven rebounds. The third Lobo in double figures was junior Jayda Bovero who scored 10 points and collected four rebounds.
UNLV enters the contest coming off of an explosive contest against Utah State. The Lady Rebels claimed a 55-53 victory in overtime at home but lost several players to ejection. Two players will be serving suspensions against UNM on Wednesday as a result of the altercation.
The Lady Rebels are led by junior Dakota Gonzalez who averages 12.3 points per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds. She is followed by classmate Brooke Johnson who averages 12.1 points and 4.3 rebounds.
The Coaches:
The Lobos are led by head coach Mike Bradbury in his first season with UNM, his 10th season overall. Bradbury posts a career record of 186-123 and is 8-6 at the helm of the Lobos.
UNLV is coached by Kathy Oliver in her ninth season. She has guided the Lady Rebels to a 128-140 record in her tenure and is 359-348 overall in her 24-season career.
Series History:
The Lobos are 23-31 overall against UNLV including a 14-8 home record and an 8-22 record on the road. Last season, the squads split meetings with UNM claiming a 67-53 victory at home on January 13 before falling 57-48 on the road on February 3. The Lobos are 4-3 in the last seven meetings with the Lady Rebels.
