ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Earlier this summer when Cole Gautsche was selected to represent the 2016 Lobos at Mountain West Football Media Days in Las Vegas, the league office asked for action pictures of him for a large banner. There were none to be found in 2015. There were pictures of Gautsche, who usually wore a neon hat and helped call in signals from the sidelines. None however in action.
That’s because the 2015 season was one of transition for Cole Gautsche, moving from quarterback to tight end. It was also a redshirt season for Gautsche, who as a true freshman went from riding a yellow school bus to games to playing in front of 100,990 fans in Texas within a span of nine months. However, it was Gautsche that nearly willed UNM to miracle win over Boise State in a game UNM trailed 25-0 at the half before Gautsche went in after halftime and got UNM to within 32-29, but no closer.
He had moments as a quarterback. His 181 yards rushing against UTEP was the second-most ever by a UNM quarterback in a single-game. His long touchdown jaunt at Hawai’i gave UNM it’s first win outside the state of New Mexico in several years. Now, with a year of practice under his belt, the redshirt senior has his sights on making a name for himself as a tight end. Ironically, he got the change to spend a season picking the brian of his former high school teammate Reece White, who starred at tight end for UNM for the past few seasons.
