Lobos Start Practice for 2016 Campaign Thursday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The 2016 football campaign for The University of New Mexico will be one in which the Lobos look to continue to build.  This time, they are building off a bowl game.

The 2016 campaign officially begins on Thursday when 105 players will hit the practice field in preparation for the home opener on Thursday night, September 1 against South Dakota.  In all, UNM will play six homes games, five road games and a neutral site road game against Air Force.  Most of UNM’s Fall camp practices are open to the public, and they are generally held in the mornings.

Last year the Lobos went 7-6 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain West’s Mountain Division, missing the title clash by one game.  UNM returns 17 starters from the 2015 season, and three others from 2014 as head coach Bob Davie has some veterans to lean on.  Among the top players back are Dakota Cox, who is looking to be the first player in school history to lead the team in tackles all four seasons, and Cole Gautsche, a local student-athlete from Cleveland High School who redshirted in 2015 after starting at quarterback for three seasons and has now switched to tight end.

The following 2016 Fall Camp schedule is subject to change.  All practices are held either on the South practice fields or inside of University Stadium.  For practices on the South practice fields, no fans or media are allowed between the two fields.  Media can film around the edges of the practice field, but are asked to not film right next to the players on the sidelines.

For practices inside University Stadium, fans are asked to stay in the stands.  Media can report and film from field level with the usual game guidelines (behind the second dotted line, and outside the team areas).
