BAYAMON, Puerto Rico – Former University of New Mexico men’s soccer student-athlete Michael Kafari has joined Puerto Rico FC of the NASL, starting in his first match over the weekend.
Kafari made his debut with his new squad Saturday in the team’s 1-0 victory over Rayo OKC at home. Kafari logged the full 90 minutes in the win, recording two tackles and one clearance. Highlights of the match can be seen below:
“This is a great opportunity for Michael,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “He went there on trial, was signed, had a slight injury but quickly recovered and started, playing 90 minutes, in a good win for the club. I think he’s in a great spot and couldn’t ask for more.”
Kafari played for the Lobos from 2010-13 and still holds a share of the record for most NCAA postseason games played at New Mexico with nine. After his playing career, Kafari was drafted by the MLS’ Vancouver Whitecaps and eventually made his way to the Sporting Kansas City roster. In just three years after his collegiate career, Kafari has played professionally on three continents before landing with Puerto Rico FC.
“Michael’s story is pretty unique,” Fishbein stated. “He was born in Ghana before his family moved to Boise, Idaho. He was an attacking player as a youth. He came to New Mexico and we converted him to a defensive center midfielder. He graduated in three and a half years with great grades. He’s been really ambitious and adventurous. His professional travels have taken him all over the world. I’m really proud of him in terms of his confidence and his willingness to take risks.”
