Regional Appearance Example of Lobo Baseball’s Consistency

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico baseball team has wrapped up its season, marking another year of consistency for the program. The Lobos won a Mountain West Conference Championship and advanced to its fifth regional tournament in seven years.

The Lobos’ trip to the NCAA Lubbock Regional put the program in a rare group. Of all the school’s in this year’s NCAA Regional field, 23 have matched the Lobos’ five appearances in seven years. However, most of that group is made up of “Power 5” conference institutions. The Lobos are one of only seven schools in this year’s NCAA field not from a Power 5 conference to make five of the last seven regionals (New Mexico, Coastal Carolina, Rice, Dallas Baptist, Oral Roberts, Cal State Fullerton and Louisiana-Lafayette).

The Lobos’ first regional appearance during this stretch came in 2010, when the Lobos snapped a 48 year NCAA postseason drought. Head coach Ray Birmingham took over the program in 2008, and turned the Lobos into a regional staple in his third season.

Since Birmingham has taken over the program, the Lobos have won six MW trophies and received over 50 All-MW honors. The program has received an All-American honor 13 times and had 26 players drafted by MLB.

The Lobos’ consistency in the W/L column is matched by the program’s consistency in the classroom. Since the 2008 season, the Lobos have finished with a 3.0 GPA or higher in 11 semesters, trending upwards. Going into this spring semester, the baseball program at New Mexico has reached a 3.0 GPA in seven straight terms.
