ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Prior to Thursday’s team conditioning drills and competition, head coach Bob Davie had a surprise guest, and Courtney Frerichs, who won a team national title and an individual national title this season, had over 80 Lobo Football players in rapt attention.
Frerichs was UNM’s top finisher in cross country as the Lobos won the national title in November of 2015, and then two weeks ago, Frerichs won the NCAA title in the 3000-meter steelpechase with an NCAA record time. While Frerichs talked about her training and commitment, she talked more about the comradarie between all of UNM’s teams.
She stated that the success of UNM Football last year was inspirational to many of UNM’s student-athletes, and that the cross country and track team notices when other student-athletes encourage them and root them on. “We all have different disciplines, but we are all Lobos for Life and we are all on the same team.”
Frerichs stuck around to watch some of the conditioning competition, but she couldn’t stay too long. Olympic trials are in two weeks, and just like the football team, conditioning was the order of the day.
