ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The 2016 Lobo Scholar-Athlete Banquet was held at the UNM Student Union Building on Monday night, with Casey Dowling and Aasha Marler, both of the women’s track team, receiving UNM Bookstores/Dining and Food Services Post Graduate Scholarships and women’s skiing earning the Athletic Director’s Cup.
Along with Dowling and Marler, Mariah Rimmer was awarded the Lou McKinnon Wellborn Scholarship.
In addition, the 2016 UNM All-Academic Team, made up of the top academic performer on each team, was announced. The team members were Connor Rusch (baseball), Cullen Neal (men’s basketball), Whitney Johnson (women’s basketball), Jackie Baro (beach volleyball), Adam Cotton (men’s cross country), Rhona Auckland (women’s cross country), Jack Ziltz (football), Andre Garcia (men’s golf), Kalyn Thayer (women’s golf), Patrick Brachner (men’s skiing), Sydney Staples (women’s skiing), Josh Dye (men’s soccer), Alex Cabrales (women’s soccer), Shelbie Franc (softball), Amelie Braul (swimming and diving), Augustus Ge (men’s tennis), Rachana Bhat (women’s tennis), Yannick Roggatz (men’s track & field), Christina Clark (women’s track & field), and Devanne Sours (volleyball).
For team awards, the most improved award went to women’s basketball, while the Athletic Director’s Cup for the top academic program went to women’s skiing. Austin Treadwell of baseball and Alissa Söderberg of women’s track and field were named the winners of the PACKS Program Award, and Emily Cahvez of women’s soccer and Carl Stajduhar of baseball were named the Lobo Club Student-Athletes of the Year.
One of the top honors bestowed is the Director’s Chair Awards. Presented to student-athletes that graduate with a 4.00 grade point average, five were awarded director’s chairs with the Lobo logo and their names inscribed on the chairs: Alex Estrella of baseball, Whitney Johnson of women’s basketball, Christina Clark of women’s track and field, Heleene Tambet of women’s cross country, and Yannick Roggatz of men’s track and field.
Two non-academic awards were presented as well, as the Jamie Koch Distinguished Service Award with the David Harris, and the Loren Dils Courage Award went to Devon Williams.(4/26/2016) 2016 Lobo Scholar-Athlete Banquet
