INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The University of New Mexico equaled its school record as four programs earned official public recognition from the NCAA for having a 2014-15 APR score in the top 10 percent of the NCAA in a particular sport. The four programs were women’s golf, women’s tennis, men’s golf and men’s tennis.
The total gives New Mexico 11 public recognitions over the last three seasons. UNM’s four sports were tied for the second-most in the Mountain West, behind Fresno State, which had five sports recognized. UNM has now had 20 sports recognized by the NCAA for superior APR scores since the first APR Public Recognition announcement in 2006.
Full APR scores will be released next Wednesday, April 20, and UNM is expected to have all 22 sports reach the 930 threshold established by the NCAA for the multi-year rate. That would mark the sixth straight year that all UNM programs have achieved the 930 benchmark. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.
The announcement marks the sixth time that the women’s tennis program has received NCAA public recognition, having previously earned it for four straight seasons from 2004-05 to 2007-08, and now two years in a row. It’s the third straight year for both men’s tennis and women’s golf. Overall it’s women’s golf’s fourth public recognition. It is the first honor for men’s golf. All four programs have perfect 1000 APRs for its multiyear rate. The women’s tennis team was one of seven in the league honored and the men’s golf team was one of four in the league honored. The women’s golf team was one of two and men’s tennis was the only Mountain West teams to earn recognition.
