ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobos take a break from conference play, but remain in California for a two-game midweek slate at Sacramento State. The Lobos sit at 15-8 overall with three Mountain West Conference series wins under their belts.
The Lobos are coming off a weekend series victory over San Diego State, taking two out of three games against the Aztecs. Overall, the Lobos picked up some big time performances from its starting pitchers. On Thursday, Luis Gonzalez pitched 7.2 innings, holding the Aztecs to two earned runs while striking out six batters. On Friday, Carson Schneider earned the victory on a complete game effort. He limited the Aztecs to nine hits and no walks over nine innings with two earned runs. Finally Saturday, Tyler Stevens pitched well despite the loss. He allowed four earned runs while striking out two batters. He allowed just seven hits and no walks.
The offense averaged five runs scored per game, helping push the Lobos latest run to seven wins in their last nine games. They are also first in the win column in the MW.
Against Sacramento State: This is the first meeting between the two schools.
Up Next: The Lobos will return home to face UNLV for a three game series thatwill run from Friday, April 1 through Sunday, April 3.
SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATE … The Sacramento State Hornets ended their weekend series against North Dakota with three wins, pushing its record to 14-8 record. Their home slate against North Dakota was their opening series in Western Athletic Conference play. The Hornets are 8-2 at their home venue.
Freshman Matt Smith has been a sensation for Sacramento State, batting .421 in his first 57 at bats. He has four doubles and a team-best 13 RBI.
On the mound, Sam Long leads Sacramento State with 24 strikeouts over 32.2 innings pitched.
HISTORY OF SUCCESS… At 7-2 the Lobos are once again ahead of the pack in the Moutain West Conference. Since 2008, the Lobos have finished the year as the champions or runners up in the MW regular season standings or MW Tournament Championship.
STRONG STRETCH … New Mexico has won seven of their last nine games during a strong stretch this season. The run started with two wins over Grand Canyon on the road, followed by a three-game sweep of San Jose State at home. The Lobos fought tooth and nails with Texas Tech on the road in a loss, before taking two out of three games against San Diego State on the road.
FOLLOW MY LEAD … The Lobos are batting .312 with 24 walks when leading off this season, good for an inning-starting OBP of .414.
ATTENDANCE UPDATE … Through six home games the Lobos are averaging 960 fans, which is 73rd in the country.
DUREE-ABLE… Taylor Duree faced one batter on Saturday at San Diego State, marking his 71st career appearance. He is the second pitcher to reach 70 appearances at New Mexico and is now in second place all alone on the UNM career appearances list.
He is now three spots ahead of David Steinberg with 69 appearances (Steinberg played from 1979-82). He is now four appearances away from tying Joe Coleman for first on the UNM career list. Here is the top 10:
