Lobos Play Host to UTEP Wednesday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team plays host to UTEP on Wednesday night in WisePies Arena – The Pit at 7 p.m. MT. The game is available on ROOT Sports.

The Lobos will look to rebound off of a loss to Illinois State last Saturday. They were down by one with 56 seconds left to play but couldn’t get a defensive stop to finish off the game, falling 79-74. Elijah Brown led the Lobos with 21 points. He is averaging 15.8 points per game and is second on the team in rebound with 5.0 per game.

New Mexico comes into the game with a 5-3 record but are 4-0 inside WisePies Arena this season. The Lobos are shooting 49.4 percent from the field, which leads the Mountain West. They are third in the league with a 75.1 shooting percentage from the foul line.

UTEP comes into the game with a 2-4 record. The Miners have lost their last three contests, falling to Mississippi State 61-54, Southeastern Louisiana 72-56 and Northwestern State 79-67. Their two wins this season came against Louisiana College in their season opener and Western Michigan at the Gildan Charleston Classic.
 
UTEP was picked to finish sixth in the Conference-USA Preseason poll. Last season they finished sixth in their league and had an overall record of 19-14.
 
The Miners are shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 34.2 percent from the three and 64.8 percent from the foul line. Domini Artis leads the way for UTEP, averaging 15.7 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game. Two other Miners are finishing games in double-figures. Omega Harris and Matt Wilms are averaging 15.6 ppg and 12.7 ppg, respectively. Wilms has the best shooting percentage on the squad at 64.6 percent (31-48).

ABOUT THE COACHES:
After Saturday’s loss to Illinois State, head coach Craig Neal is now 64-41 in his career. UTEP’s head coach Tim Floyd is in his seventh season and owns a 124-41 record with the Miners. In his career, he has an overall record of 452-261.

ABOUT THE SERIES:
New Mexico and UTEP will meet for the 142nd time in program history on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in WisePies Arena – The Pit. The game will be available on ROOT Sports. UTEP is the second oldest rival for UNM behind New Mexico State. The series started in the 1928-29 season.

The Lobos lead the all-time series with the Miners, 76-65. The Lobos are 46-21 at home against UTEP and 26-10 inside WisePies Arena – The Pit. The last time the Lobos faced UTEP was on March 15, 2011 in the first round of the NIT. The Lobos claimed a 69-57 victory.
