New Mexico Game Notes | Utah State Game Notes
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — At the end of Bob Davie’s Tuesday afternoon press luncheon, it was mentioned that today was Cole Gautsche’s birthday. “It is,” said Davie, mentioning that he called up the team around the fifth-year senior. “I think he’s 36 years old.”
Not really … he’s 23 today, but that means he was just 11 years old the last time New Mexico won four straight football games. This week on national television on ESPN2, the Lobo will look for five in a row as UNM travels to face a Utah State team in need of a three-game win streak to keep it’s bowl streak alive. The game will kick off officially at 8:21 p.m.
It was 12 years ago in 2004 when UNM last won four in a row (actually winning five), and it seemed like UNM’s last game took nearly that long to play. A fast game was marred by a one hour, 49 minute lightning delay that knocked out power to University Stadium and sent most of the 17,290 to the parking lot and home for good as rain poured down and the heavens opened. However, the Marching Band returned for the resumption of the game, as well as some 400 hearty souls, who made for a fun atmosphere, and it wasn’t lost on the members of the team and Coach Davie himself.
“If you were there at 1:10 a.m. at the end of that game in the stadium,” said Davie, “my email is rdavie@unm.edu, you send me an email, your home address and a little story as to why you thought it was important to stay, and I will definitely commemorate the occasion.” Davie added, “The people that were there, I really do appreciate. There was a corps of people that actually made a difference in that game, and I have the utmost respect.”
However it’s onto Utah State as the Lobos are looking to keep pace with the first place Wyoming Cowboys, who defeated Utah State 52-28 last Saturday. The Lobos and Aggies have played back-to-back tight games, with UNM losing in 2014 in Logan 28-21 and then UNM winning last year in Albuquerque 14-13 after USU’s Brock Warren missed a 41-yard field goal in the final seconds.
The Lobos will enter the game with the nation’s top rushing attack at 358.8 yards per game, and although three of the top five rushers in the nation come from the Mountain West, no one has the dynamic duo of Teriyon Gipson and Tyrone Owens, who are 183 and 110 yards away respectively from hitting the 1,000-yard mark, and they sit first and second nationally in yards per carry.
UNM still leads the nation in runs of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 yards, and will need to once again get some explosive plays against a very tough Utah State defense that has allowed just 10, 21 and 14 points to UNM over the last three seasons.
