AUSTIN, TEXAS — Senior Niko Hansen of The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team has been named to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America First Team for his outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom, CoSIDA announced Tuesday.

Hansen is the 20th men’s soccer player in New Mexico history to earn the honor since the award’s inception – the most of any institution in the country in that sport, regardless of division. All 20 Lobos who have earned the honor have done so in the last 14 seasons, all under head coach Jeremy Fishbein. Lobo soccer has actually had 21 student-athletes earn the honor, with Jason Hix earning the award in 1995 as an at-large selection.

In addition, Hansen is the 97th student-athlete in New Mexico history across all programs to earn the honor and one of just three Conference USA student-athletes to earn the honor this season.

Hansen’s honor marks the first time in his career that he has been selected as CoSIDA Academic All-America. He earns his spot on the first team after maintaining a 3.49 grade point average in psychology. The senior led the Lobos to their first Conference-USA Tournament Championship and their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance after registering a Conference USA-high in points (29, 14th NCAA), goals (13, 9th NCAA) and game-winning goals (7, T-1st NCAA).

Hansen was also named the offensive MVP in two tournaments this season, was named to the Conference USA First Team and earned College Soccer News National Player of the Week on Sept. 19.

In addition to his performance on the field, he racked up Conference USA All-Academic Team and CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors.

The Lobo completed his career at UNM this week with a total of 70 points on 28 goals and 14 assists.
