ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After earning a strong victory in its season opener, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will host its second game of the season on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at WisePies Arena – The Pit. Not only will the game mark the highly-anticipated Rio Grande Rivalry contest between the intrastate rivals, but it will also mark the Lobos’ Nike N7 game.
UNM will be showing off brand-new turquoise jerseys on Tuesday night in their N7 game. The Lobos are proud to continue their partnership with Nike N7 as part of a celebration and recognition of American Indian Heritage Month in November. Nike N7 is a long-time commitment and mission to inspire and enable two million Native American and Aboriginal youth in North America to participate in sport and physical activity.
Tuesday’s fans that enter the game wearing turquoise, the color that represents harmony, friendship and fellowship in the Native American culture, will be admitted for just $4.
The Lobos are one of just six women’s teams honored to participate in the event that helps raise awareness about the Nike N7 program and show support to tribal communities in New Mexico. There will also be a special jersey auction Tuesday, proceeds from the auction will be used to benefit the NB3 Foundation. The silent jersey auction will take place in the north concourse of The Pit and continue through halftime with the winners being announced at the end of the third quarter. The Lobos enter Tuesday night’s matchup coming off of an 83-56 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday for head coach Mike Bradbury’s first win at the helm of the Lobos. Junior Alex Lapeyrolerie paced the Lobos with 21 points going 7-for-9 from the field and 6-of-8 from behind the arc. Six three pointers ranks Lapeyrolerie tied for third in program history in made threes in a single game.
Lapeyrolerie was one of four Lobos to score in double figures including senior Richelle van der Keijl (20), freshman Mykiel Burleson (14) and sophomore Emily Lines (10). In addtion, junior Cherise Beynon posted a double-double with 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Coaches:
The Lobos are led by head coach Mike Bradbury in his first season with the Lobos, his 10th season overall. Bradbury posts a career record of 179-117 and, following UNM’s season-opening victory over FDU, he is now 1-0 at the helm of the Lobos.
The Aggies are coached by Mark Trakh in his sixth season. He posts a 61-73 record at NMSU and a 370-260 overall record in his 21st season.
Series History:
Tuesday’s meeting will mark the 73rd meeting between the squads. The Lobos lead 47-25.
