Lobos Host Nevada with Bowl Eligibility in Sight

New Mexico Game Notes | Nevada Game Notes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico Lobos have done something they haven’t done in nine years, and that’s win three games in a row.  While getting to four would be great, that is not what is of major concern to UNM head coach Bob Davie.  His only concern is the Nevada Wolf Pack, and the memory of Nevada’s 35-17 win over the Lobos in 2015, and rectifying that.

“Anybody that saw the game last year in Reno knows what a challenge this is,” said Davie at his weekly press luncheon.  “They decisively beat us there last year.  If you look at the statistics, the score is probably not really indicitive of how badly they beat us.  The had over 500 yards.”

It’s that memory that should mean that UNM won’t be getting ahead of itself this week, so the talk internally of a four-game win streak (which hasn’t been done since 2004) or a back-to-back bowl berth (which would be the fourth time it’s happened in school history) is non-existent.  It’s all about the Nevada Wolf Pack and being the better team in the stadium on the scoreboard and on the field Saturday night in a game that will kick-off at 8:15 p.m. on ESPNU.

New Mexico is cooking up something historic, and the fans that come out to University Stadium should be in for a treat.  The Lobos feature the nation’s best rushing attack at 357.0 yards per game, and UNM’s top two running backs in Teriyon Gipson and Tyrone Owens lead the nation in yards per carry, with Gipson one at 10.7 yards per run and Owens second in the country at 8.2 yards per rush.

And now the defense has gotten into the act, allowing just 17 and 21 points in the last two games.  In addition, UNM’s defense has allowed under 300 yards in back-to-back games for the first time since 2008.

New Mexico Athletics has even put together an amazing deal for the weekend, with UNM honoring members of the military and first responders for “Heroes Day”.  The Lobos are offering up a “Three Day Weekend Pass” that gets a person a ticket for all three weekend events, Lobo Men’s Basketball on Friday night, Lobo Football on Saturday night, and Lobo Women’s Basketball on Sunday afternoon.  That “Three Day Weekend Pass” costs just $20, and better yet, just $15 if purchased at the WisePies ticket offices.  A “Three Day Weekend Pass Family Pack”, is just $60 for a family of four for all four games.  If you haven’t been a part of Lobo Athletics, now is the weekend to get involved.

Once again there are plenty of great promotions along with the game.  The game is UNM’s Heroes Day game.  The first 5,000 fans through the gates will receive a Lobo Dog Tag chain.  The game is also UNM’s “Read with the Lobos” game and “Rio Rancho Public Schools Day”.  The department is also offering a special deal for our friends at Kirtland Air Force Base.  Members there can get a game ticket for $25, which gets them a courtesy shuttle from KAFB, a game ticket, and a $10 concessions voucher.

UNM’s Howl Zone will have plenty of Heroes Day action with displays from the Army ROTC, UNM Veterans Resource Center, the National Guard, the New Mexico Air Force Guard, an engine and ladder display from the Albuquerque and Bernalillio Fire Departments, three Bernalillo Police Units, the Albuquerque Police Department Recruiting SUV and the New Mexico State Police Crime Scene Investigations truck.

The Army National Guardwill be performing pre-game with the UNM Spirit Marching Band, and there will be a halftime swearing in for the Army National Guard.

UNM’s Greeks will also be on hand, hosting a dry tailgate from 2-7:45 p.m.  The Sorority/Fraternity house judged with the most spirit will win Panda Express for the house.

Once again, fans will have a chance to purchase 50-50 raffle tickets, with the money raised split between the Lobo Club and the winner.

BUYING TICKETS & COMING TO THE GAME
Information on purchasing tickets can be found at www.unmtickets.com, and buy tickets to this game, click here.  The Ticket Office in WisePies Arena is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week, and the University Stadium Box Office will open at 4 p.m.  Fans getting tickets closer to game time should use the Northwest Corner ticket booths, as there are more windows, which means shorter lines.

In addition, here is the complete stadium map with shows were many of the new amenities are located.

Once again, all fans can purchase beer and wine throughout the stadium.  Click here to read up on UNM’s policies for the purchase of beer and wine.  In conjunction with Levy Restaurants, credit cards will be accepted at all concessions.  Speaking of concessions, this week’s specialty item are Pork Tamales with a red chile sauce, which will be sold for $9 (for three tamales).
